On April 4, 1943, ten American prisoners of war and two Filipino convicts executed a daring escape from one of Japan’s most notorious prison camps. Narrated by Tom Selleck. Sunday, December 7, 1941 was a beautiful morning on the Hawaiian island of Oahu. A few sailors and soldiers were already up and playing a game of football near Pearl Harbor. Others were sleeping in their barracks or aboard ships after a late night of partying in Honolulu. An unlucky few were wiping the sleep from their eyes and reporting for duty aboard their ship anchored off Ford Island in Pearl Harbor. Still others headed for adjacent Hickam Field or up north to Wheeler Field. Ship decks were being washed, planes wiped down and hangars swept. It was just another day in paradise. At 7:55 A.M. all that changed as the first Japanese planes dropped their torpedoes and bombs on a stunned American Pacific fleet. The United States had been violently thrown into World War II. Every sailor, airman, soldier and civilian who was in or near Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941 has their own individual story of courage, fear, heroics or tragedy. No two stories from that day of infamy are the same. From sailors on the U.S.S Arizona and West Virginia on Battleship Row to pilots at Hickam and Wheeler Fields, to young children who were waved at by Japanese pilots flying over their homes, the memories remain vivid to this day. The Manhattan Project in World War II was an enormous undertaking that required the efforts of many of the world’s most brilliant scientists. Thousands of physicists, mathematicians and engineers were needed to design, build and test the world’s first atomic weapon. The United States government did everything in its power to attract these individuals to the top-secret program. For me it was personal: One of those assigned to the project was my uncle, John Edmund Gray. I called him Uncle Jack. The eventual goal of the Manhattan Project was to find a way to end World War II, a conflict in which an estimated 60 million people were killed during the years 1939-1945. My Uncle Jack was one of those the American government relied on, not for his ability to fire a rifle, rather for his brainpower. After the war, John Gray went on to serve American presidents and become one of the leading advocates in the world for the use of atomic energy for peaceful purposes. Along the way, he became a close colleague of famed Admiral Hyman Rickover, the father of America’s Nuclear Navy. Ironically, my Uncle Jack’s work in the atomic field included consulting with the Japanese as they rebuilt their post-war society. John Gray was regarded as a pioneer in the field of nuclear energy and was front and center as the evolution of that power from wartime use to peaceful means came to fruition. My Uncle Jack’s account is just one of 16.1 million American stories that had its roots in World War II.

The true story of one of the most incredible escapes in all of World War II, with an ending that will surprise viewers. Two Americans, Damon Gause and William Lloyd Osborne, both escapees of Bataan-“Rocky" Gause from Corregidor and escaped and sailed from the Philippines to Australia and freedom. It took Gause and Osborne 52 days and 3,200 miles to reach freedom. During the trip the Americans faced typhoons, constant threats from Japanese ships, submarines and airplanes, lack of water and food and even a visit to the world’s largest leper colony. When the two Americans finally arrived at General Douglas MacArthur’s office in Brisbane, Australia after their harrowing journey, the only thing one of the war’s most famous generals could say was “Well, I’ll be damned.” What makes this story so amazing is that both men kept a journal during their travels and also had a small camera on board given to them on one of the islands they visited. We have their daily thoughts and emotions to guide us during their long and treacherous journey, plus some incredible photographs that the men took on their trip.

The surviving World War II veterans from one of history’s greatest military missions were about to raise their silver goblets one last time ending a decades long tradition. It was time for the veterans to hold this final toast. They could wait no longer. Their numbers had dwindled to just a few. Many of the names of the 80 flyers who took part in the April 18, 1942 raid on Japan may not be familiar to most, but collectively they will always be known in history as the Doolittle Tokyo Raiders. Long ago these American flyers, aboard 16 B-25 bombers, had accomplished a daring mission that changed the morale of an entire nation. The aviators, led by famed commander Lt. Col. James Harold Doolittle, had taken the fight directly to the enemy for the first time in World War II and delivered payback for Japan’s sneak attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941.

The occupying Germans had been forced out of Wiltz, Luxembourg by advancing American troops. It had been almost five years since the townspeople of Wiltz had been able to celebrate their annual tradition of Saint Nicolas Day. The Nazi’s had outlawed the annual Christmas-related celebration when they occupied Luxembourg in 1940. Even though American GIs had liberated them in late 1944, the citizens and especially the children of Wiltz, a town in the hills bordering the dark and foreboding Ardennes forest, had no resources left in which to mark their very special holiday. That’s when a group of soldiers of the battle-weary 28th Infantry Division got together and brought back hope and joy back to a small town that hadn’t had anything to smile about in almost five years. One GI, Corporal Richard Brookins, played the role of Saint Nick, costume and all. His sleigh, a U.S. Army jeep. Brookins and the men of the 28th passed out candy and baked goods to the children of Wiltz. Songs were sung. It was a wonderful day for the free citizens of the town and for the American soldiers who wouldn’t be home for Christmas in 1944. Ten days following the party, this part of Luxembourg erupted as the Battle of the Bulge began. Richard Brookins and the rest of the 28th Division pulled out and never gave their time in Wiltz a second thought. Following the war, the people of Wiltz vowed to never forgot the kindness and generosity of Brookins and his fellow American soldiers who brought back St. Nicolas Day to Wiltz on December 6th, 1944. Beginning in 1947, the annual St. Nicholas day became the American St. Nick celebration, complete with someone dressed as Saint Nick in a jeep re-tracing the exact route Dick Brookins took in 1944. A shocked Richard Brookins knew nothing about the annual American Saint Nick celebration in his honor until 1977 when he was invited back to re-create his role. Thousands of people turned out to welcome him. He had become a hero. The American St. Nick is a World War II Christmas story that spans seven decades and continues to this day.

The Incredible Escape of Jewish-American B-17 Pilot Bruce Sundlun from Nazi-Occupied Europe in World War II. During overseas active duty beginning in June 1943 Bruce Sundlun, a Jewish-American college student, served as a B-17 Flying Fortress pilot in the England-based 384th Bomb Group of the Eighth Air Force at Grafton-Underwood Air Base. Sundlun’s plane, the Damn Yankee, was shot down over Nazi-occupied Jabbeke, Belgium on 1 December 1943 after being damaged by flak and attacked by German fighter planes following the bombing of Solingen, Germany, on the “Yankee’s” 13th mission over Europe. Five of his crew were killed, four others captured by the Germans. Above and Beyond is Bruce Sundlun’s amazing escape from occupied Europe in World War II, filmed on location in Belgium and narrated by Sundlun’s own daughter, Kara, who travelled back to the village of Jabbeke in Belgium, to re-trace her father’s footsteps in World War II.

Two American 101st Airborne (Screaming Eagles) medics caught in a church in Normandy, France during the opening hours of D-Day. Outside a savage battle raged all around them. The church changed hands several times with American and German forces over-running the village of Angoville-au-Plain. Inside the small church the wounded wore both Allied and Axis uniforms and civilian clothing. The American medics, Robert Wright and Kenneth Moore of the 2nd battalion, 501st PIR, treated all who were brought into the 12th century Norman church, no matter whether they were friend or foe.

Honor and Sacrifice On D-Day, June 6, 1944. The green 29th Infantry Division faced some of the most brutal fighting on Omaha Beach. In June of 2014, a handful of remaining members of the 29th Infantry Division made a final trip back to Normandy to recognize the 70th anniversary of D-Day. The World War II Foundation was along as these veterans shared their stories and looked over the bluffs of Omaha Beach one last time. The aging veterans also visited the Normandy-American cemetery to say their final goodbyes to their friends who never left Omaha Beach alive on June 6, 1944. Local villages and towns also honored the men of D-Day with dozens of celebrations around Normandy.

Narrated by Emmy Award-winner Damian Lewis, who played Richard D. Winters in HBO’s Band of Brothers. Tells the story of the building and dedication of the Richard D. Winters Leadership monument in Normandy, France in June of 2012. The film focuses on the leader of World War II’s “Band of Brothers” and the leadership skills he possessed. A never before seen interview with the late Major Winters is utilized, as well as interviews with the “Band of Brothers” who are still alive. The film also touches on the relationship the Major had with those in Normandy post-WWII, including the family who has owned Brecourt Manor for centuries. Brecourt was the location of famed assault (then) Lt. Winters led on D-Day to take out the four German 105mm guns firing on American troops landing on Utah Beach.

The Army company's legendary exploits in World War II inspired Stephen Ambrose's book, Band of Brothers and the Emmy®-winning HBO miniseries of the same name. Following two years of hard training, the soldiers of Easy Company parachuted into Normandy on D-Day and, later, into Holland for Operation Market Garden. They fought their way through Belgium, France and Germany, survived overwhelming odds, liberated concentration camps and drank a victory toast in April 1945 at Hitler's hideout in the Alps. In 2009, twenty of the few remaining survivors from Easy Company shared their rarely told stories of sacrifice and courage for Marcus Brotherton's oral-history book project, We Who Are Alive and Remain, Untold Stories From the Band of Brothers. In this film, those same veterans, along with the families of three deceased others, recount the horrors and the victories, the bonds they made, the tears and blood they shed and the friends they lost.

Also travel with “Izzy” to Treblinka death camp where his parents and younger brother were murdered and to Auschwitz-Birkenau, where “Izzy” used the motivation of his father’s final words to him to stay alive. He is reunited with those who, at great risk, helped him to stay alive. A somewhat strained impromptu meeting with a former German soldier is also chronicled.
